Winter is Coming Dress

Untitled

Let me apologize in advance for the craptastic photos. I'm stuck using my iphone at the moment.

If you saw my last post, you know I was worried about "topping" my Macaron muslin. I'm glad that I chose to use a winter suiting because I feel this dress really isn't comparable to the last one. They are definitely made for two different seasons. Try to ignore the lush green foliage. Imagine it's almost winter, the trees are barren and it's very cold outside.

I'm not sure why I chose the fabric that I did. I was in a funk and something about it jumped out at me. I normally don't wear pink and I'm not sure the pink/blue combo is the best for my skin tone but I went with it anyway. The colors seem very winter to me. I got a kind of  60's vibe from it and so intended to try to draft/add a peter pan collar using the facings from the beginning.

I really pushed myself with this dress. Along with modifying the facings for the the collar, I also lined the waist/skirt part of the dress. It was not easy and it made me stop and think a couple of times... I definitely had a couple of Tim Gunn "make it work" moments. I'm glad I made myself stick to the plan. I'm pleased with the outcome.

As you can see I added two buttons to the top. You might remember me doing this for my Hazel...this was not part of the original plan for this dress buuuuut.....I didn't draft my peter pan collar perfectly so there was a larger gap between the lapels (right word?) than I hoped for. I considered a bow but decided on the buttons as a way of filling up that gap. I'm pleased with the way they look, though. Hopefully I don't get branded as the "two button chick" because of it, ha.

Not sure why the back is bunching up like that but I think it's the way I was standing.

The dress is genuinely warm. It was pretty hot outside when I took these pics, but I wanted to style the dress as I intended to wear it this winter. Even before I added the tights, I was sweating while indoors. The lining keeps in the heat and made the dress slide over the tights easily. This is the perfect cold weather dress, even with the short sleeves.

I have to be honest, I'm not sure I'll make this particular pattern again, and if I do it won't be for some time. But, I'm glad I made the two that I did because I love them. I can't wait to see what the next pattern will be for Sew Colette 2.0!

While taking pictures, my daughters decided to get in on the action. I also have two boys but they are always off doing...ya know...boy stuff. HA! They aren't interested in Mommy's photo shoots.  I thought these pics were too cute not to share. ;)

Cute dress. Cute kids. I like that you added buttons; I think they make a good tie-in with the darker tights/shoes and the light-colored dress.

1. Your photos are lovely, not "craptastic" ;-) 2. I love this combo with your skin and hair, and I love this dress and 3. I'm glad to see your Colette pattern turn out so well. I keep wanting to try the Hazel but I've never used their patterns before.

sometimes the best things are the projects that just kinda evolve as they progress! It's good that you got to play with some new things, and they clearly paid off!

I love it! The collar and the buttons add a lovely touch to the dress, and it looks really well-made too.

HA! What can I say? I'm an absolute sucker for a peter pan collar ;) Oh, and thank you!

Thank you so much for your sweet compliment :)

I agree! It's nice as I get more comfortable with constructing garments to be able to veer a little from the "original" designs. All these small projects really build my confidence in dressmaking. Thanks for your sweet comment!

Hi Meghan,
1. Thanks, lol. The iphone does actually take decent photos but sometimes it's hard to get things to focus and the pictures often seem washed out. 2. Thanks again! That's very sweet of you to say! :) 3. I've had mostly good luck with their patterns. I'm a small D/full C cup and I have a thicker waist than my measurements normally call for (I can blame my 4 wee ones for that, lol) and they seem to work for my frame. That said, I haven't had complete success. I still have a Peony and Clover pattern I haven't been able to successfully translate for my figure. Hopefully I can tackle those again soon. Still, you should definitely try Hazel, it's so simple and easy to adjust and the result is such a cute dress!

Thanks Carolyn! After I added the buttons, I had that thought as well. I really need to get a pair of lighter colored tights, though. I think it would look nice with this dress :)

Hi! this is SO adorable - I really love it. The fabric was a great choice and the collar + buttons combo is really appealing.
Also, did I read correctly that you're in Northern Virginia? If so we are basically neighbors!

you're hair is stunning and i TOTALLY love your winter dress. i'm also feeling stalker-ish saying this but i lived in Arlington a couple years ago and i'm longing to be back in norther VA so i might just have to live vicariously through your blog ::sigh::
all the best!

Hi Sue!
Thank you :) And yup, I'm in NoVa :) How exciting to know there are more bloggers around me. I'm always so envious of all the sewing bloggers in the UK, Canada and on the West Coast! I want meet-ups, damnit. lol. Now if we just had the awesome fabric sources that some of those places have "/.

Thanks Sarah! lol @ being "stalkerish" ;) Feel free to live vicariously through me, heehee! I have to admit to being a bit jaded about the NoVa area...maybe because I've been here practically my whole life...but I tend not to appreciate it the way I should. It's good to have people remind me that it can be pretty amazing here also. :)

well i do have ulterior motives...my parents live about 3hrs. north in PA and i am all the way in North Carolina. i was probably pretty jaded about living in Arlington while i was there too. i can remember suddenly hating all people--simply because there are SO many of them there. how do you have 4 children while living there?! i love it--i swear i didn't know anyone with kids...at all. i'm hoping if we move back i will be able to find some other family people!

Both of your Macarons are beautiful!

I'm enjoying reading your blog - although it was funny when I found it last week because my name is also Jamie. For a split-second I was very confused... :) I'm looking forward to seeing what you make next!

Hi Jamie!
Thank you so much for your kind comments! And yes, I was a little confused when I got the email that I had a comment from Jamie. lol! ;)

You suddenly remember hating people, hahahahaha!!! That seriously made me LOL and I told my husband and then he LOL. Because we totally relate. There are people EVERYWHERE and they aren't always nice. The traffic, the waiting in lines..ugh. It gets stressful. We survive by living on the outskirts of NoVA, southwest of DC. It's a long commute for my husband that I can't say he loves but with 4 kids it's the only way to afford, well...anything on a one income family. If you ever move back you'll at least know us with our 4 crazy kids, haha ;)
